National Poll Project runs public opinion surveys. This page says what we collect when you take a survey or visit this site, which services help us run it, and how long we keep it.
What we collect
- Your answers to each survey.
- When you start the survey, when you move through it and when you finish.
- The link you used. A link we text you carries an ID for your record in the voter file we texted from. A link from an online survey panel carries the panel's ID for you.
- Your IP address and your browser and device type. Your browser sends these with every page.
- If you use our opt-out page, your phone number, the time, your IP address and your browser type.
Your answers are linked to that ID. For texted surveys, that means they are linked to your voter file record, which includes details like your name, age, party registration and where you live.
Survey pages don't set cookies and don't carry advertising or analytics trackers. Our font service counts page views for billing (see Adobe Fonts below).
How we use it
- To run our surveys and study the results.
- To weight results so they reflect the population, using details from the voter file and from your answers.
- To spot the same person taking a survey more than once. We compare IP addresses for this. A panel respondent on a network that already finished a survey may be turned away.
- To stop texting people who ask us to stop.
We don't use your survey answers for fundraising.
Services that help us
These companies help us run our surveys. Each one handles some of the information above.
- Google Cloud hosts this site, our database and our files. Everything we collect is stored there.
- Adobe Fonts (Typekit) serves the fonts on our pages. Your browser asks Adobe for them, so Adobe receives your IP address, your browser type and the name of this site. Adobe also counts page views to bill for the fonts.
- Switchboard sends our survey texts and handles replies like STOP. It has your name, your phone number, the ID for your voter file record and your survey link.
- Cint recruits people from online survey panels. If you came from a panel, Cint learns whether you finished, were screened out or were turned away.
- L2 supplies the voter file our texted samples and voter details come from.
- Anthropic provides AI models that help us read and summarize written answers. They receive those answers with voter file details such as first and last name, city and party.
We may share survey data with the organizations we do research with and for. That can include individual answers linked to voter file records. We may also share information when the law requires it.
How long we keep it
We keep survey responses for 25 years, along with the details collected with them. We keep opt-out requests so we know not to text that number again.
Your choices
- Taking a survey is up to you. You can stop at any point. We keep the answers you gave up to then.
- To stop our survey texts, reply STOP to any text, or enter your number on our opt-out page.
- To ask about your information, email hello@nationalpollproject.com.
Security
We limit who can see survey data. No system is perfectly secure, so we can't guarantee it.
Children
Our surveys are for adults. We don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 18.
